New Bedford – Catherine “Catarina” O. Mello, age 86, of Acushnet, MA passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Manuel C. Mello.
She was born in Sao Miguel, Azores to the late Antonio F. De Mello and Maria (Oliveira) Mello. Cathy, as she was affectionately known by, had been the proud cook and owner, alongside her husband Manny, of the well-known New Bedford Restaurant, M & C Restaurant & Café for many years up until her retirement. Outside of the restaurant, she loved spending time with her family, enjoyed cooking for family and friends and spending time on the family farm. Her family meant everything to her and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her loving sons, Paul J. Melo and his wife Lisa and Michael A. Melo; her beloved grandchildren, Michaella Ganey and her husband DJ, Nathan Melo and his wife Sarah, Matthew Melo and his wife Nicole and Victoria Melo; her loved great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Gunner and Hunter; and her siblings Adriano Mello, Louise Costa and Antonio Mello.
She had been the loving grandmother of the late Jacob Melo and mother-in-law of the late Jacqueline Melo.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that you consider a donation in Cathy’s memory to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Cathy’s visiting hours will be held on Monday, January 23, 2023 at Perry Funeral Home from 5:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. Her funeral will take place on Tuesday morning, beginning in the funeral home at 9:00 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis Church in Acushnet at 10:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in Rural Cemetery.
