Obituary

CHICOPEE – Roger J. “Butch” Martin, Jr., 77, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, January 12, 2023. He passed into Eternal Life at home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on August 25, 1945, a beloved son of the late Rodger J. Martin and Dorothy E. (Cardi) Martin. He was raised in Chicopee, graduated from Chicopee Comprehensive High School and had lived in Chicopee for most of his life. He served his country during the Vietnam War in the United States Army and obtained the rank of Private First Class. He was employed for over 25 years as a Plumber in the Water and Waste Control Department at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee. He was a communicant of Saint Anne Church and a member of the American Legion, both in Chicopee and the Elks Lodge in Wakefield, RI. During his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing and camping in Connecticut and Rhode Island. One of his greatest accomplishments was being inducted as an Honoree into the Chicopee Comprehensive Hall of Fame. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Diane M. (Roy) Martin. They were married on October 14, 1972 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Holyoke and were blessed with over 50 years of happiness together. He also leaves his two loving children, Tammy A. Martin-Griffin and her husband, John L. Griffin, and Todd J. Martin, all of Chicopee; his two cherished grandchildren, Gabriella M. Martin and Jaydon L. Griffin; his dear sister, Shirley Liberty of Vermont; his two dear brothers, Thomas Martin and his wife, Patricia, of Ludlow and Donald Martin and his wife, Kathy, of Chicopee; his four dear sisters-in-law, Joan Martin of Chicopee, Norma Murphy of Honesdale, PA, Cecile Roberts and her partner, Thomas Gavin, of South Hadley and Georgianna Seidell and her husband, Richard, of Westfield; his two dear brothers-in-law, Robert Roy and his wife, Diane, of South Hadley and Richard Roy of Arizona; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Martin and Roy families. He will also be deeply missed by his two beloved canine companions, his dogs Bubba and Gucci. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his two dear brothers, Robert and Richard Martin; and his two dear brothers-in-law, James Liberty and Hugh Murphy. Butch fought a long time and ultimately decided his journey to his forever home would be done his way. He showed his family the true definition of love and that is a gift that we all are so blessed to have forever. The strength Pepe showed was almost superhuman and he will forever be our Hero. His Funeral will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023 beginning at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (the funeral home will open at 8 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Burial with United States Army Military Honors will follow the Mass at Notre Dame Cemetery, 63 Lyman Street, South Hadley, MA 01075. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, January 21, 2023 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. prior to his Mass.
