Captain Edward “Eddie” Longo, 89, of Fairhaven passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday January 11, 2023 after a brief illness. He was born January 20, 1933 in Fairhaven, where he spent the majority of his childhood.
Eddie lived a very fulfilled life where he dedicated his livelihood to the sea. At the young age of 17, he started working on scallop boats. Throughout many years, Eddie built a long-lasting reputation on the sea and waterfront. He became a captain and owner of a scallop boat the Blue Surf, worked towards “Save the American Fisheries,” spoke before Congress lobbying for a two-hundred-mile limit for fishing boats, owned and operated The Gear Locker ship chandlery, and endured many dangerous and joyful fishing trips.
On land, Edward continued his legacy by serving on the Board of Managers for the New Bedford Port Society for over fifteen years. He participated in the annual memorial services for lost seamen.
Amongst Eddie’s many accomplishments, he made many trips to Europe, lived a brief time in Italy, and spent many wonderful years in Aruba. Throughout his 89 years, Eddie had many hobbies that included fishing, traveling with Mary, enjoying time with his dogs, gardening, wood working, listening to Frank Sinatra, spending time with his daughter Dina, and many memories around the pool with his nieces and nephews.
Out of all of Eddie’s adventures, his greatest was with his beloved Mary. He spent over forty years with Mary, making memories, enjoying life, and being one another’s best friend. Eddie will miss the life he built with “his Mary” dearly.
Eddie is survived by his best friend and partner, Mary E. Hogan; his sister, Carol Tyson; his daughter, Dina Trondson and her sons, Justin and Logan. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and in-laws whom he loved dearly.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Augustine and Sylvanna (Ferreira) Longo, his brother Joseph, and his loving sister Vicky.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday January 17th at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, Fairhaven at 10 AM. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday January 16th from 4-6 PM. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
