Obituary

Valdir Alves (60) of Brockton died December 30th at home under hospice care surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Galinheiro, Fogo, Cabo Verde son of the late Alberto Galvao and Maria Hercilia Tavares. Valdir was a professional who in 1985 embraced the cause of communication, having worked at Rádio Nacional de Cabo Verde. Known for his work on behalf of our Communities in the USA, he also stood out as founder, producer and presenter of the television program "Cabo Vídeo" and of the radio program "Porton di Nos Ilha", from 1996 to 2015. He was animator of the program "Saudades de Cabo Verde" on Radio Voz do Emigrante and collaborator of Radio "Nha Terra" in Boston, as well as editor of the online newspaper Caboverdeonline.com. He was one of the founders and editor of the newspapers "Correio do Imigrante" and "Nôs Jornal" and collaborator of Rádio de Cabo Verde, Televisão de Cabo Verde and Radio France Internacional. He was a communicant of St. Edith Stein Church and attended journalist schools in Cape Verde and Russia. Valdir was a presenter and organizer for many Cape Verdean events. He was known as a mentor to many children in the area. He enjoyed Cape Verdean music, loved, coached and played soccer and going to the ocean. Valdir also was known as a kind, gentle man to many of his family and friends.

Valdir is survived by his wife Celia Lamas of Brockton, his son Yannick Alves of Brockton, 3 daughters, Elsa Alves Lopes and husband Jose Lopes of Boston, Diva Tavares and fiancé Daniel Martinez of Pawtucket and Amy Alves of Brockton, 6 brothers, Jose Tavares, Alcides Tavares, Pedro Galvao, Marcelino Galvao, Alberto Monteiro and Fausto Teixeira, 2 sisters, Ana Dever and Joana Galvao, 3 grandchildren, Carlos Lopes, Desiree Veiga and Josoel Alves Lopes.

Visitation in the Home of Funerarias Multi Culturel, 238 Court Street Brockton Thursday January 5th from 2-7 pm. Services in the Funeral Home Friday January 6th at 9 am. Followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Edith Stein Church, 71 E Main Street Brockton at 10 am. Burial to follow in Melrose Cemetery, 88 N Pearl Street Brockton.
