Walter D. Collins, Sr.

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Walter D. Collins, Sr., age 78, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham. He was the beloved husband of the late Madeline C. (Litterio) Collins, to whom he was wed for forty-six years at the time of her death on May 8, 2013.

Born in Boston, MA on May 27, 1944, he was a loving son of the late Thomas and Dorothy (Long) Collins.

Walter grew up in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston and was educated in Boston Schools. Prior to retiring, he had worked as a baker for both Kasanof and Green & Freedman Bakeries in Boston and later as a building superintendent for Autotech Industries of Mansfield.

A resident of Mansfield for the past forty-four years, Walter was a member of the Local 5 BCTGM Union and a communicant of Saint Mary’s Church in Mansfield. His family, whom he loved dearly, was truly the essence of his life and the memories he created will last in their hearts forever.

Walter loved dancing, playing bingo, pinochle, engaging in projects and tinkering around his home. When younger, he was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a familiar face around the Town of Mansfield, especially in his red Ford pickup truck and was fondly known by many as the “Can Man”.

He is survived by his devoted children: Lisa M. Labelle and her husband Brian of Mansfield, Cindy A. Thomas of Plainville, Walter D. Collins and his life partner Michele Batten of Taunton and Nicole E. Wright and her husband Jonathan of Mansfield. He was the cherished grandfather of Ericka, Alicia, Kyle, Rianna, Matthew, Karissa, Kailey, Brooke, Jason, Cameron, Amelia and the great grandfather of Kayla and Grayson. He was the dear brother of Thomas Collins and his wife Pat of Hingham, Shirley Houlihan of Holbrook, Robert Collins and his wife Linda of West Bridgewater, Elizabeth DiNapoli of Kentucky and the late Marie Ferrara. He is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, January 6th from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 7th at 11:30 A.M. in Saint Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt Street (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Mansfield.
