Obituary

John Mathurin Sr. was born Thursday, May 29, 1941, to Philomen and Thomas Mathurin in Fond St. Jaques, St. Lucia, W.I. John was known as Neptune to family and close friends. John had 11 siblings and is survived by 7; Mary, Albina, Sheila, Julietta, Paula, Elizabeth, and Ursula. John lived in St. Lucia until his 24th birthday and moved to St. Croix, where he met his wife, Mary Frederick, in 1967. They got married on July 12, 1969. They were married for 53 years and survived by nine children. Judith, Allen, Joanna, Gilbert, Tracy, John Jr, Lumina, Shellina, and Paul. John had grandchildren who are Amba, Shamilia, Akim, Dexter, Taylor, Millicent, Aliyah, Syrenna, Idalis, Janniline, Malik, Cleone, Shafique, Tracy Junior, Alysia, John Patrick, Katherine, Janae, Denay, Julianna, Mallory, Joshua, John Jr, Jianna, Jeremiah, and nine great-grandchildren Amilyah, Nicoy, Alaisia, Bailey, Lyla, Isaac, Honest, Alani, Malandra, Azalea, and Ali’zayah. These are people that will keep his story alive. John grew up in St. Lucia, where he worked with his grandparents and parents until his young adult years when he left the farm and moved to St. Croix for work and to provide for his family in St. Lucia. When his parents passed away, he did his best to help his family. John worked for Hess Oil as a welder and did masonry work on the weekends to build homes in the Virgin Islands. His passion was working on cars and taking care of his family. In 1989 John gave his life to Christ and became a God-fearing Christian. He served his church as an evangelist, bus driver, and choir member. John also changed his children's life when he brought the word of God to them in 1990, and each one committed on their own to becoming God-fearing Christians. John was filled with joy with the graduation of his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed attending their weddings. In 2005 John was grateful to complete the building of his own home on St. Croix. However, due to his health, he moved to Boston, where he remained. But would go home from time to time to work on his house. John's favorite things to do in Boston were to help his wife and kids. He was passionate about playing bingo, dominos, bowling, painting, and solving math problems with his grandkids, but most of all, he read his bible daily and went to church and loved his prayer line. His favorite foods were a toasted peanut butter sandwich and steamed fish and vegetables. Through John, his kids inherited his creativity. We got courage from his leadership and his humility. He was many different things to each one of us. But to all, he was and will remain "Father.” Funeral Services will be held at the Brady & Fallon Funeral Home 10 Tower St. (Opp. Forest Hills MBTA Station) Jamaica Plain on Wednesday December 28 at 11 am. Relatives and friends are invited and may visit with John's family from 10 am until 11 am prior to the start of the service. Interment will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
