Obituary

Captain Olav Eriksen Tveit, 69, of Acushnet died Wednesday August 7, 2002 unexpectedly at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Berit (Ytreland) Tveit. Captain and Mrs Tveit celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary on January 28, 2002.

Born in Karmoy, Norway, son of the late Erik and Metta Tveit, he immigrated to the United States in 1959 and had lived in Acushnet for most of his life. He became a naturalized United States citizen in 1966.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairhaven.

Captain Tveit was a commercial fisherman who was the former owner and operator of F/V Bell until his retirement. He had also fished on various boats out of New Bedford, Boston and Alaska before building his own vessel.

He was a member of the New Bedford Fishermen's Union and the Retired Fishermen's Club. Captain Tveit was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed traveling with his wife and family and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Eric Tveit and his wife Seannine, of Fairhaven; 3 daughters, Eva Tillett, and her husband Andrew, of Fairhaven, Ann Tveit of Cherry Hill, NJ, and Britt Tveit of Brookline; 2 brothers, Oddmund Tveit of Acushnet and Enok Tveit of Karmoy; a sister, Ella Mannes of Karmoy; 4 grandchildren, Brian Tillett, Kirsten Tillett, Eric Tillett and Sven Ericsen Tveit; and many nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Rasmus Tveit, Ole Tveit, Johannes Tveit, Serena Tollefsen and David Tveit.

His Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 10 AM in Trinity Lutheran Church, 16 Temple Place, Fairhaven. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visiting hours will be at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford on Sunday August 11, 2002 from 1-3 and 5-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 16 Temple Place, Fairhaven, MA 02719.
