Charles L. Metrakas
January 30, 1952 - November 19, 2022
Charles L. Metrakas passed away suddenly at his home in West Newbury on Saturday, November 19th. He was the son of Theodore and Eudokia Metrakas of Milton, MA. Charles was the beloved husband of Eugenia (Fillios) Metrakas with whom he shared 38 wonderful years of marriage. He was the devoted father to his children Chrystalia Metrakas of Reading, Katerina Metrakas and her husband Mohamed Hassan of North Chelmsford, and Maria Metrakas Ortiz and her husband Nathan Metrakas Ortiz of North Chelmsford. He was the proud grandfather of Joseph, Rania, and new baby Zakaria. Charles was the brother of Elaine Metrakas Krommydas and her husband Rev. Nicholas Krommydas of Wayland, and the late Paul Metrakas, Lois Nionakis and Christos Metrakas. He is survived by several cousins, nieces, nephews and many dear friends. Charles, often called by his Greek name Kosta, was passionate about his Greek Orthodox faith and heritage.
Charles was a life-long learner. He graduated from Milton High School in 1970 and from Suffolk University in 1976 with a BS in Criminal Justice. Charles took over as owner and operator of the family business, the Metrakas Deli Market in 1980, which was a well-known landmark in Milton. From 1990 until present, he was the proprietor of Northern Properties of West Newbury. During that time, Charles and his wife also owned Spinach Pie North in Newburyport, MA, a small specialized bakery. Along with his career accomplishments, Charles had many talents, hobbies and interests in which he loved to share with others. In 2004, he became a student of Tai Chi discipline and continued to be committed for the remainder of his years. He was a lover of music. He not only enjoyed listening to music, he also played the piano, trumpet and was most recently learning how to play the flute. He often could be seen tending to his house plants and relished in expanding his home plant collection. Charles was passionate about politics and often listened to, as well as called into, his favorite talk radio station. Charles was a big fan of sports and especially enjoyed watching the New England Pats and Boston Celtics. Most of all, Charlie appreciated a nice meal and a fine glass of wine surrounded by his family and close friends. He will be dearly missed by many who considered him a good friend.
Visiting hours will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., (Rt.16) Wellesley on Tuesday, Dec. 6 from 4-7pm. A funeral service will be held in St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 57 Brown St., Weston on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 11am. Interment in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
