BUXTON- James P. Burnham, age 74, passed away November 19, 2022, at his home after a hard
fought battle with cancer.
He was born in Lewiston, ME on August 29, 1948, a son of the late Lawrence and Helen Winona
(Burnham) Whittier. James finished his schooling to start a family and took a job driving over the
road. He also attended The Bible Institution of Portland ME, but had a passion for heavy equipment
and self-employment, later owning and operating his own logging, towing and trucking company.
James had a soft spot for anyone who had it rough, giving out many free tows, and lending a
helping hand to a person in need of a break.
His hobbies were many, such as golf, pool, hunting, and racing, however, he was often on the phone
in three-way call with his dearest and closest friends and family. James was not afraid to ask a
question, or have a conversation to get an answer.
He is predeceased by his son, Mark David Burnham of Bridgton, Maine, two sisters, Irene
of Westbrook and Beverly of Naples, Maine.
James is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Peggy (Poole) Burnham; his children James Burnham and his Cheryl of Biddeford, ME; Jerry Burnham and his wife Lisa of Gorham, ME; and Jonathan Burnham of Buxton, ME; daughter in law- Shelly Burnham of Fryeburg; eleven grandchildren, Kayla,
Kassandra, Jerry, Derrick, Ashley, Jon, Justin, Brittany, Christina, Spencer and Marissa; brother Larry Whittier and his sister Stella Whittier Morton; also, six
great grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday Nov. 25 from 11 AM - 1 PM at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel, 498 Long Plains Rd. (Rt. 22), Buxton. Burial will follow for immediate family at Pine Grove Cemetery in Buxton.
