Mr. Frank J. Dyer, of Andover, a retired Newspaperman, passed away at his home on Thursday afternoon, November 10, 2022. He was 84 years old.
Born in Lawrence, he was the son of the late Frank J. and Mary (Burke) Dyer. He was a graduate of St. Augustine School and Punchard High School. He was also a graduate of Los Angeles City College and Columbia University.
Frank served in the Marines as a member of the Ceremonial and Presidential Guard unit in Washington, D.C. The unit provided guard duty for President Eisenhower at Camp David, the Presidential Retreat in Maryland and at the Summer White House in Newport, R.I. He was also a member of the Silent Drill Team.
Mr. Dyer began his newspaper career at the Long Island Star Journal in Queens, N.Y. and followed at the Lowell Sun and through different ownerships at the Boston Herald Traveler, the Boston Herald American and Boston Herald. Throughout his 40 years in the newspaper business, he was a sports writer, Sports Editor, Sunday Editor, News Editor and Executive Assistant to the Editor-in-Chief of the Boston Herald.
He reported on the Boston Celtics and traveled with the team for over a year, during their championship years in the mid 1960’s; he also covered the then Boston Patriots, in the American Football league and three Muhammad Ali championship fights. Upon retirement, he continued working as a Senior Analyst for the Auditor of the Commonwealth, A. Joseph DeNucci.
He enjoyed playing tennis, both socially and competitively. Frank wrote many freelance articles and also contributed articles to the Encyclopedia of New York City.
Frank is survived by three children; Tiffany Colombosian and Christopher and Damon Dyer, all of Andover, five grandchildren; Talia and Alexander Colombosian and Emma, Carly and Max Dyer. He was predeceased by his wife; Donna E. (Collins) Dyer.
