Mary A. Rands (Carroll) of Melrose formerly of Winthrop passed away on October 28, 2022. She was 93 years old. Mary was the beloved wife of the late George W. Rands. Born in Boston, she was the cherished daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Favreau) Carroll.
Mary graduated from Winthrop High School-Class of 47. Mary was a Sunday school teacher in St. John’s Episcopal Church in Winthrop. She was a member of the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association; the Winthrop Catholic Woman’s Club and was a Girl Scout Leader. Mary enjoyed bowling in the woman’s bowling league at the Lynn Bowling Lanes. She was an avid gardener, which lead to her beautiful flower arrangements.
Mary was the devoted mother of Sandra J. Guilfoyle and her husband James of Winthrop, Sheryl A. Coughlin and her husband Richard of Saugus and Susan A. Wolf and her husband Michael of Pleasantville, NY. She was the adored grandmother of Richard Coughlin, Matthew, Patrick and Andrew Guilfoyle, Benjamin and Stephanie Wolf and the late Julie Coughlin and loving great-grandmother of Cassandra and Danielle Coughlin, Mason and Teagan Coughlin and Connor Guilfoyle. Mary was the dear sister of the late L. Robert Carroll, Marguerite Fowle, Joseph Carroll, Mildred Plante, James Carroll, Elinor Gallo and Kathryn Evans as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held in the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home 210 Winthrop St. Winthrop on Saturday, November 19, from 11AM-1PM, with a funeral service beginning in the funeral home at 1PM. Relatives and friends are invited. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s name can be made to the Alzheimer’s Assn. 309 Waverly Oaks Rd. Waltham, MA. 02452.
