Obituary

Isabella P. “Scottie” (Trainor) Gormley, age 89 of Bridgewater, loving Mom and Nana, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022 at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford Ma. She was the wife of the late Archibald Gormley. Born in Greenock, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late James and Rebecca (Dyer) Trainor. She had been a resident of Bridgewater since 1989, having previously resided in Brockton after immigrating from Scotland in 1959.

Isabella, who preferred to be called Isabel, was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Greenock, Scotland. Isabel came out of school and went straight into becoming a weaver, of which she was very proud to be, and spent years braiding miles of rope for ocean vessels. After moving to the United States, she had been employed at the former Dave Breen’s Coffee shop which later became Zack’s Coffee Shop in Campello.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren, was very caring to all she met, and always there if anyone needed a helping hand. To let loose, she loved going to any and all Scottish Festivals, and listening and dancing to Scottish Highland music, especially to the Pipes and Bands! In recent years, Isabel had enjoyed attending and dancing at the Irish Club with her late longtime friend Jim O’Malley in West Roxbury, Ma.

Isabel also spent many years on the beach, or as close to the water as humanly possible. Often this was in Wareham, Ma. at Pinehurst Beach, always busy and having lots of fun with family and friends!

Another favorite seaside adventure of Isabel’s was taking long walks in the fresh air at the waterfront in Plymouth, Ma., stopping for a bite at Woods, connecting with family and friends, and never leaving without her trip to the British Imports!

Isabel’s love of the ocean was often captured by a motto she often repeated, “The Ocean Heals All”.

When it came to faith and community, she was a longtime communicant of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, and a member of the East Bridgewater YMCA.

Isabella is survived by her children, Christine Sprague of Bridgewater with her husband Lenny Sprague, along with their sons, Len Sprague Jr. currently living in Japan and Christopher Sprague in Taunton, Ma with his fiancée Kayla Branson.

Archibald Gormley Jr. of Brockton, with his wife Kathleen Gormley and their son, Michael Gormley with his daughter Madison Gormley living in West Boylston, Ma, and Melissa Gormley of Boston, Ma.

Isabel also leaves behind nieces and nephews, along with many close family and friends, both in Massachusetts and across the Atlantic in Scotland and England!

Isabel’s kindness, love, support, and steadfast resolve, all bolstered by a bedrock of Scottish pride, were always available to her family and friends.

She will be sadly missed by many and lovingly remembered for her memories that she left us all!
