Obituary

Manuel Mendonca DaSilva, 74, of Lowell, passed away Monday, October 31, 2022, at Lowell General Hospital after a brief illness with his beloved family by his side.

A son of the late Joao DaSilva and the late Rosa (Mendonca) DaSilva, he was born July 20, 1948, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal and was raised and educated there. He worked as a mason and a baker in Portugal before coming to the United States in 1983, settling in Lowell’s Back Central Street Neighborhood.

He was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, and a member of the Portuguese American Center and the Portuguese American Civic League, and enjoyed playing cards.

He first worked in manufacturing as a laborer for Roche Brothers and then Old Mother Hubbard for a number of years, before retiring in 2010.

His survivors include his four children, Jose Silva and his wife, Mary, of Dracut, Leo Silva of Lawrence, Rui Silva of Lowell, and Luiza Harding of Dracut; his six grandchildren, Katelyn, Brandon, Justin, Alexia, Joshua and Samantha; his sisters, Merces Bettencourt of Canada, Luzia Horta of Lowell and Nizalda Mendonca of Lowell; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was also a brother of the late Maria Fatima Bettencourt.

You are invited to His calling hours from 9 until 11 a.m. on Friday, November 4, 2022 at the MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816. His Funeral Mass will be offered at ST. ANTHONY CHURCH, 893 Central Street, Lowell, at 12 Noon. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery in Chelmsford.
