LEICESTER: Richard E. Hammarstrom,87, of 1073 Main St., died Friday, Oct.28 in UMASS Memorial-Lake Ave., Worcester.
He was born in Worcester, the son of Elmer G. and Agnes (Hinckley) Hammarstrom and later graduated from South High School and attended and played baseball at Anna Maria College in Paxton studying criminal justice. He later served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a member of the Rochdale American Legion Post 205. Dick was predeceased by a brother and 5 sisters. He leaves many nieces & nephews.
Dick worked in the maintenance dept. for the Worcester Dept. of Public Schools for 20 years, retiring in 1998. He had many jobs over his lifetime including chief of security at Anna Maria College in Paxton for Lusignan Security and was a bartender at the former White House restaurant in Worcester. He was a former Commissioner at the Leicester Housing Authority, a longtime golfer and member of Hillcrest Country Club and was 32nd. Degree Mason.
Dick played baseball for the Third Army, played baseball in the Texas League (semi pro baseball), coached and managed Leicester Little League, Senior League and Legion baseball teams.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held on Monday, Nov. 7 at Noon, in All Faiths Cemetery, Island Rd., Worcester. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Leicester Little League Assoc., P.O. Box 393, Leicester, Ma. 01524. The MORIN FUNERAL HOME, 1131 Main St.,Leicester is directing arrangements for the family.
