SALEM, MA___John J. Tolka, 75, of Salem and formerly of Worcester passed away unexpectedly Sunday morning, October 23, 2022 at his home.
John is survived by his sister, Maryellen Kowalchek and her son, John’s nephew, Andrew Kowalchek, a niece, Kelly Tolka and her children, Patrick and Ava, a nephew, Joseph Tolka and his children, Zackary and Caliegh, as well as many Godchildren. He was born and raised in Worcester and was predeceased by his father, Joseph and by his Mother who he adored, Catherine. He was also predeceased by a brother, David. John was a graduate of South High School in Worcester and has lived in Salem for the past three decades.
John started his adult life being drafted into the U.S. Army. He was very proud to serve his country. After his army service he went to work for numerous airlines starting at LaGuardia in New York and ending his career at Logan Airport, Boston. He then started at Whole Foods and was working there until the time of his passing. He was an avid skier and traveled the world in his early years and throughout his life. He loved all New England sports teams but the Red Sox and Patriots took the cake. John adored his nephews and nieces; they were his children. He will be tremendously missed and loved by his family and friends as John was simply put “A Good Man”.
There will be a celebration of life honoring John on Sunday, October 30, 2022 at The Breakaway, 221 Newbury St, Danvers, Ma. from 12:00 - 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a pediatric oncology foundation.
Calling hours for Mr. Tolka will be held on Monday, October 31, 2022 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM in HENRY – DIRSA FUNERAL HOME, 33 Ward Street, Worcester. A prayer service will be held during the calling hours. Interment with military honors will follow at 2:00 PM in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon.
