CHICOPEE – Michael Arthur Giera, 71, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. He passed into Eternal Life at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Holyoke on June 25, 1951, a beloved son of the late Max S. and Alberta M. (Gosselin) Giera. He was raised in Chicopee, graduated from Chicopee Comprehensive High School in 1969, and was a lifelong resident of the city. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Constellation and attained the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. He received the National Defense Service Medal. Following his service to his country, he returned home and attended Holyoke Community College and Springfield Technical Community College and received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Massachusetts. He was employed as a Mail Handler for the United States Postal Service at the Bulk Mail Center on Fiberloid Street in Indian Orchard and retired in 2018. Michael enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping with his family and friends. He leaves his beloved wife and soul mate, Carol A. (Wadlegger) Giera; his loving son, Matthew Samuel Giera of Chicopee; his loving step-daughter, Diane M. Edwards of Westerly, RI; his cherished grandson, Quinn Edwards of Westerly, RI; his dear sister, Suzanne M. Devaney and her husband, Michael, of Scottsdale, AZ; his two sisters in law, Joanne Wadlegger of Southampton and Kathleen Wadlegger of Longmeadow; his dear brother in law, Jeffrey Wadlegger of Chicopee; his cherished niece, Sara Jane Pluta of Scottsdale, AZ; his cherished nephew, Sam F. Pluta and his wife, Sky Macklay, of Baltimore, MD; and several nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended family members. His family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., followed by United States Military Honors at 3:45 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 4 p.m. at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home. His burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
