SPRINGFIELD – Roger A. Bouchard, 75, of Chicopee and a former longtime resident of the Forest Park section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. He passed into Eternal Life at the Mont Marie Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Holyoke surrounded by all the memories that he loved and cherished. He was born in Springfield on January 27, 1947, a beloved son of the late Edgar E. Bouchard, Sr. and Arline E. (Jarvis) Bouchard. He was raised in Springfield, graduated from the High School of Commerce in Springfield in 1964 and had lived in Springfield for most of his life. He moved to McKinley House in 2018 where he lived the remainder of his life. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Coral Sea CVA43 and attained the rank of Radioman Third Class. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with Two Bronze Stars, the Navy Unit Commendation Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was employed by the City of Springfield as a Heavy Equipment Operator for 38 years at the Springfield Department of Public Works and retired in 2011. He was communicant of Holy Name Church in Springfield where he also was a member of their Holy Name Men’s Club. During his younger years, he was an avid bowler and was proud to have won the Intercity Candlepin Bowling Championship at the former Rose Bowl Bowling Alley on State Street in Springfield and when he was older, he could be seen bowling on Saturday afternoons on Channel 40. He received a heart transplant in 1991 and immediately began walking to build up his endurance. He competed in several walking marathons locally and as far as Bermuda, received many medals and continued to train and mentor fellow competitors. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He leaves his dear sister, Annette E. Doyle of Chicopee; his four cherished nephews, David Doyle and his wife, Suzanne, James Doyle and his girlfriend, Emily, William Doyle and John Bouchard and his partner, Laurette; his two cherished great nephews, US Air Force Staff Sergeant Timothy Doyle and Daniel Doyle; his two cherished great nieces, Monique Bouchard and Heather Doyle; his dear friend, Jane Mackay; and his many dear cousins, friends and extended family members. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his dear brother and sister in law, Edgar E. Bouchard, Jr. and his wife, Gloria; his dear brother in law, Walter “Jake” Doyle; and his two cherished nieces, Michele A. Bouchard and Debbie Lee Bacon. His family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. Celebration of Life Service at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. His Committal Service with United States Navy Military Honors will follow the Service at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
