Obituary

Robert E. Simmons, 74, of New Bedford passed away Friday October 21, 2022 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Karen Sylvia-Simmons.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Everett R. and Ruth (Sampson) Simmons, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

Bob was well known as a professional referee and umpire in baseball, softball, basketball, field hockey, and volleyball at the high school and collegiate level. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed attending these events. Bob enjoyed spending time and vacationing with his wife Karen and friends. His hobby was classic cars and he owned an antique Chevy Impala and Ford Mustang.

He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; two brothers, Edward Simmons and wife Robin and Russell Simmons and wife Kerry; and his nieces and nephews; Brian Lawrence, Shawn Simmons, Dawn Simmons, Brandi Souza, Allison Dellaire, Adam Simmons, Nicholas Simmons, and Jeffrey Simmons.

He was the brother of the late Dale Simmons.

His memorial visitation will be held on Sunday October 30th from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
