Herman was born on May 2, 1941, in Ocilla, Georgia, to the late Leonard & Osteen Roberts Griffin. He graduated from Irwin County High School in 1958. He married the late Ethel Steverson in 1960 and loved her every day of the last 62 years. Together they raised Cindy, Sandra, Andrew, Julie, Justin, and Jeffrey.
He retired in 2020 from Luke Propane where he worked for 42 years. During his tenure there, he delivered propane, drove fertilizer trucks, hauled peanut wagons, and held many other roles over four decades. He was dedicated to supporting the farmers and residents of Irwin County and did not hesitate to go the extra mile for his neighbors.
Herman most recently attended Spring Hill Primitive Baptist Church in Gladys, Georgia. He and Ethel were longtime members of Cornerstone Baptist Church where he served as the Director of Sunday School for many years. He was also a deacon and the lead usher.
He was devoted to Ethel and enjoyed the life they shared on his family’s homestead at the edge of town. He loved listening to gospel music and watching Gunsmoke reruns.
Herman could be seen driving his green Dodge Dakota truck around town, far under the posted speed limit. He enjoyed visiting with friends and spending quality time in conversation with loved ones. Fried catfish, chocolate moon pies, and boiled peanuts were among his favorite foods to enjoy.
He is survived by his children: Cynthia & Lance Swearingen of Ocilla, Julie Griffin of Ocilla, Justin & Dana Griffin of Quitman, and Jeffrey Griffin and Hosang Kim of Reno, Nevada; grandchildren: Evan Griffin, Oliver Griffin, Sam Griffin, Paul Swearingen, April Swearingen, and Shelby Griffin and great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Edna Griffin of Kennesaw. In addition to his parents and bride, he was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Griffin; a daughter, Sandra Griffin; and brothers, Thurman Griffin, Charlie J. Griffin, and Denzel Griffin.
