New Bedford - George Coelho, 91, of Dartmouth, passed away on Thursday, October 13, after a brief illness. George was born in Dartmouth to the late John and Mary (Pimentel) Coelho.
He grew up on the family farm in Dartmouth and graduated from Bristol County Agricultural High School in 1950. He worked in the automotive industry and as parts manager for several Caterpillar dealers until he started his own business, George’s Parts Service, in 1975. He retired in 2019.
Beside his family, his passion was classic cars, especially his beloved Corvairs. He was a regular at many area car shows and cruise nights, often driving a different car each night of the week. He was also an avid duckpin bowler for most of his life. George enjoyed playing cards, especially poker, and enjoyed cheering on New England sports teams, in particular the Red Sox and the Patriots.
He leaves behind his loving wife Veronica (Simmons) Coelho; his son John Coelho and his wife Emily of Hadley, MA; his daughter Linda Stevens and her husband John of North Kingstown, RI; his sister-in-law Natalie Simmons of Dartmouth; his niece Deborah Vaughan and her husband Steve of Dartmouth, as well as a number of cousins and friends.
George was predeceased by his parents; his brother John, his sister Irene, and recently by his brother-in-law Gilbert Simmons.
George's Services will be held in private. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
