Margaret "Marge" Gulla died peacefully in her sleep on October 16, 2022. She was 84 years old.
Marge grew up in West Roxbury, the youngest of five children of Margaret (Connelly) and Ernest L. Sullivan, a decorated World War I veteran. Marge followed in her parents’ footsteps, working as a teacher in the Boston Public Schools for more than 30 years. She earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in education from Boston State College before embarking on her career as an elementary school teacher, first in Mansfield and then in Boston. She married Frank Gulla in 1973 and they made their home in South Boston where she resided until recently.
Marge had a passion for education and dedicated her life to teaching Boston’s youth the rudiments of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Her students were known especially for their fine cursive writing. Marge taught at a number of schools in Boston, most notably the Hurley School in the South End, the Michael J. Perkins in South Boston, and the Richard J. Murphy in Dorchester. Marge was known for her generosity, kindness, wit, and keen intelligence. She loved classical music, art, and travel. During her retirement, Marge took time to visit relatives and close friends in Cape Cod, Florida, New York City, and Italy.
Marge is survived by her son, Phillip and his wife Victoria; two grandchildren, Marco and Lilla; brother Peter Sullivan and his partner Sue Ross;sister-in-law Nancy Sullivan; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Frank, and her brothers Richard (Red) Sullivan, and The Reverend Ernest Sullivan, and her sister, Elinor Foley. She will be sadly missed by the many family and friends who loved her.
A wake will be held at Casper Funeral Home, 187 Dorchester St., So. Boston, MA, Wednesday, October 19, from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Gate of Heaven Church in South Boston, MA, at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 20.
