Germaine Lucienne Hawes
WESTBROOK – Germaine Lucienne Hawes, age 87, passed away on October 11, 2022, in Portland, Maine.
She was born in Westbrook on October 18, 1934, to Joseph and Leontine (Gagne) Mailhot. She attended Saint Hyacinth School and graduated from Westbrook High School class of 1953. She cherished memories of making lifelong friends while working on a farm during her high school years. She was employed as a court stenographer, worked for the South Portland Juvenile Detention Center, and later for Sebago Moc in Westbrook for many years.
She met Edwin Hawes of Gorham and they were married in Westbrook on July 24, 1954. Together they raised two sons and two daughters. Germaine and Ed enjoyed taking rides together on their motorcycles. With three couples of close friends they took ballroom dancing lessons from Louis Sirois of Westbrook and enjoyed many Saturday nights dancing at The Roost and Harmony Hall. She was an avid reader throughout her life, loved baking and cooking for family and friends, and knitting clothing for her extended family.
In January of 1979, Germaine and Ed relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, to escape the Maine winters and resided there for more than forty years. She spent weekends at the drag races making new friends and cheering on Ed, their sons, and daughter-in-law. And, when Ed joined The Mustang Club, Germaine joined The African Violet Club. She was employed by Deluxe Check Printers and TGI. Ed and Germaine were happily married for sixty-three years until Ed’s passing in December 2017.
Germaine lived on her own until 2021 when she moved back to Maine to live with her daughters, spending time reading, dining out, and visiting with family and lifelong friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ed, her parents, and a brother, Philip Mailhot. She leaves behind two sisters, Louise Long of Ohio, Paulette LaBrie of Mississippi, a brother, David Mailhot of Mississippi, two sons, Dennis of Mississippi, and Michael of Tennessee, two daughters, Marie Moxcey (David) and Gail Price (Wayne), both of Westbrook, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great- granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by her family and dear friends, Bobbi, Gerry, and Dale.
