Janice Hulsey Mathews Sellers, 85, of Irwin County, Georgia, died Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held 3 PM, Friday, October 14, 2022, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald, Georgia, with the Rev. Ed Reeves and Pastor Beverly Arnold officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday.
Ms. Sellers was born November 24, 1936, in Douglas, Georgia, to the late Hope & Ruby Barfield Hulsey. She was a 1955 graduate of Douglas High School and earned her home economics degree from South Georgia College. She was in the girls’ ensemble throughout school. She worked in medical records for Coffee County Hospital. She owned and operated Western Sirloin in Fitzgerald as well. She was a substitute teacher for many years and was known by her students as “Mama Mathews”. Ms. Sellers was always a Daddy’s girl. She loved working in her yard and growing flowers as well as crafting and decorating her home. She will be remembered as being a very classy lady. She grew up in College Avenue Baptist Church and was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Leigh & Ray Walker of Irwin County; grandsons: Dylan & Nikki Walker and Triston Walker & Kaitlyn Rich; a great-grandson, Caleb Walker; and a nephew, Michael Andrew Hulsey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas E. Mathews and Don Sellers; two sons: Grant Lawton Mathews and Mark Thomas Mathews; a brother, Robert Hope “Bobby” Hulsey; a niece, Janet Patrice Hulsey; and a nephew, David Hope Hulsey.
