Alice T. Hogan, of West Yarmouth, formerly of Brockton, passed away Friday, October 7, 2022 at the McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich, MA. Alice was the daughter of the late Victor and Alice (Murphy) Hogan. A graduate of St. Patrick’s school, she was active in sports and student government. She was a delegate to the student government day at the Statehouse and was also involved in city politics.
In the summer, Alice worked as a lifeguard and playground instructor. She graduated from Quincy University in Quincy, Ill and was the first woman to graduate with a degree in Physical Education. She taught physical education in Connecticut for three years and in Rockland for one year. At Brockton High School, Alice taught physical education and then history for 26 years, until she retired in 1990.
Dissatisfied with inadequate opportunities for female athletes, Alice organized a number of female teachers to discuss the situation with school administration. Following much resistance, the school board finally voted to increase the number of girls’ teams and coaches.
Over the years, Alice enjoyed many trips to Europe as well as three cross country trips. In retirement, her favorite hobbies were working on her family’s history, restoring photos, kayaking, clamming and volunteering at Best Buddies Bike challenge, but what was most special to her was spending time with her niece Allison.
Alice is survived by her sister Rose Marie Callahan of W. Yarmouth and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Victor E. Hogan, John F. Hogan, William J. Hogan, Richard S. Hogan and Maureen Iannoni.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont St, Brockton on Thursday, October 13, 2022, 4-7pm. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Friday at 11:30am, followed by burial in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Avon, MA.
