Obituary

Joseph Rego, Jr., 82, of East Freetown died Friday, October 7, 2022 at St. Luke's Hospital after a courageous battle with ALS. He was the husband of Janet (Pacheco) Rego.

Born in Dartmouth, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Mendes) Rego, he lived in Freetown for most of his life.

Joseph was a communicant of St. John Neumann Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the couples club.

He was a graduate of the illustrious class of 1959 at New Bedford High School and later attended Hillsdale College.

Mr. Rego was formerly employed as a manager at Shaw's Supermarket for 43 years until his retirement.

He was a long-time member of the Mattapoisett Lions Club, where he was very involved with Harbor Days and was also a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship award.

Joseph enjoyed traveling with his wife and had visited 43 countries and 6 continents. He was a passionate man when it came to family and close friends. He also enjoyed being a sous chef and totally believed that food was meant to be shared.

Survivors include his wife, Janet; four children, Michael Rego and his wife Louisa Edgerly, Michelle Munroe and her husband Jeffrey, Daniel Parker and his wife Karin, and Christopher Parker and his companion Gina Bourassa; three grandchildren, Marisa Parker, Hunter Parker, and Alexis Parker; and his sister, Maryanne Cabral.

He was predeceased by his wife, Carol Ann (Andrade) Rego and his brother, Rev. Edmund Rego.

His Funeral will be held Thursday, October 13, 2022 at 8:30 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford followed by his Funeral Mass at St. John Neumann Church at 10 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Wednesday, October 12, 2022 from 4-7 PM.
