James J. Bretta, 80 of Somerville, MA, died September 26th at Massachusetts General Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born in Somerville in 1942, son of Joseph and Mary (Chambers) Bretta. He is predeceased by his twin sister, Eleanor Pappone of Abington, MA.
Jim was a graduate of Matignon High School and then studied at and graduated from the Pontifical North American College Seminary in Rome, Italy in 1967. He was a priest for 17 years and later was employed by the City of Somerville as an assistant to the mayor through three administrations.
Jim enjoyed the beach and his cottage in Plymouth. He was an avid reader and loved his politics.
He leaves behind his nephews, Brian Pappone and spouse Lisa of Attleboro and Kevin Pappone and spouse Karen of Brockton and a niece, Tricia Force and spouse John of Abington. Two great-nieces, Taylor and Nicole and 2 great-nephews, Andrew and Jason. Cousins Maureen Lee and spouse Robert of Sudbury and William Chambers and spouse Dorothy of Danvers, an extended family and many lifelong friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Funeral Mass at St. Bridget’s Parish in Abington, 455 Plymouth Street, on Saturday October 15th, 2022 at 10:30am. Burial to follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Rockland.
