William A. "Bill" Hughes,87, of Breezy Knoll Road in Greenville passed away on Monday September 26th in the Grandview Nursing Center, Cumberland. He was the loving husband of Shirley F. Hughes. They had been married for 46 years.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Joseph P. and Myrtle S. (Flodin) Hughes. He had lived in Smithfield for 47 years.
Bill served his country honorably as a proud member of the US Army during the Korean War. He was the proprietor of the former Rustic Well in Smithfield. After retiring from Electric Boat, Bill went on to work for Lincoln Greyhound Park and Foxwoods Race Book until retiring at the age of 82.
He loved tending to his yard and gardening. Bill’s most precious time was spent with his children and grandchildren always telling them, “Always Enjoy Life !”
Besides his wife, he was the loving father of Cheryl Metrano and her husband Jonathan of Smithfield , Nancy Nobrega of Smithfield, Kenneth Spader and his wife Janine of Cumberland and Edward Spader and his wife Mary of NH. He was the grandfather of 9 and great grandfather of 4. He was the brother of Richard "Dick" Hughes. He was the brother of the late Thelma Gaccione and Joseph "Paul" Hughes, Jr. Bill is also survived by many nieces.
A graveside service with military honors will be held Wednesday October 5th at 11 am in Acotes Hill Cemetery, Chepachet. Visitation respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the Rhode Island Veterans Home, 480 Metacom Avenue, Bristol, RI 02809
