Obituary

Gilbert M. "Mickey" Lisbon, 72, of New Bedford died Thursday May 18, 2006 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Alice (Figueiredo) Lisbon; they had been married for 50 years.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Antonio and Leopoldina (Raymond) Lisbon, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.

Mr. Lisbon was a popular chef in a number of local restaurants and chief cook at the Bristol County House of Correction on Ash Street for many years.

During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Hickox.


He was a devoted family man. He was also an avid Red Sox fan who rarely missed watching a game.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Lisbon, Sr. and his companion Lisa Roderick, of New Bedford; three grandchildren, Michael Lisbon, Jr., Tenisha Lisbon and Kayla Darden, all of New Bedford; a sister, Mary Ann Correia, and her husband Paul, of Carver; a brother, John Lisbon of New Bedford; an aunt, Florence Green of New Bedford; a brother-in-law, Joseph F. Souza, Jr., and his wife Dawn Blake Souza, of Dartmouth; and several nieces, nephews and beloved godchildren. Mickey also had a special young friend, Emanuel Pacheco, to whom he was a grandfather figure.

He was the father of the late John Joseph Lisbon and brother of the late Yvonne "Pinky" Ramos and George Soares.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 9 AM in Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Burial with military honors will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Sunday from 4-8 PM.
