Thomas B. McDonough, 97, of Marshfield, Massachusetts died on August 31 at his home.
Thomas was born in Boston, MA to Thomas P. McDonough and Agnes (Gately) McDonough. Tom attended parochial school and the High School of Commerce. Thomas was married to Mary (Francis) McDonough for 65 years before her death in 2011. Thomas made his home in Rockland, MA for 60 years, before moving to Abington, MA and then Marshfield, MA.
Tom was a loving father who enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. He was a people person who loved telling stories of Ireland and his experiences during his time in the Navy. Tom also loved sports especially his fantasy football and the Boston Red Sox.
Tom was a member of the Teamsters Union Local #25 of Boston and drove a truck for 32 years. He also worked for Boston Edison for 8 years and as a bartender at the Abington VFW when he retired. He was President of the Holy Name Society at St. Bridget’s Church in Abington, MA and sang in the choir. Tom was also a member of the Abington Knights of Columbus.
Tom served in the US Navy during World War II and among other things earned the North African European Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon. He was attached to the US Navy Armed Guard as a radioman and serviced in convoy duty around the world. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion in Abington.
Tom was a lover of Ireland; he and his Mary traveled there on more than 13 different occasions. He was a DJ on the Irish Program Emerald Airs for 26 years on Station WRPS in Rockland.
Tom leaves his loving family, three daughters Janis Donovan and her husband William Donovan of Bridgewater, MA, Joanne McDonough Nelson and her husband James Nelson of Hanover, Jeanne McDonough Rooney and her late husband William Rooney of Marshfield and a son Thomas McDonough and wife Debra (Delaney) McDonough of Whitman, MA.
Tom leaves 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. He also leaves siblings, Leo McDonough of Fort Pierce, Florida and the late Janet MacCormack and Jack McDonough.
Tom had a life well-lived.
Family and friends are invited to attend his visiting hours on Thursday September 8 from 10:00AM -12:00PM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Burial will follow the service in the Saint Patrick Cemetery, Rockland.
