Joe Edward Gahimer, 90, passed away peacefully at home on August 26, 2022 in Anderson, Indiana. He is survived by his son, James (Paula); daughters, Mary Ann McBride (Terry), Beth Booth (Antony), Janet Vischak (Ed), Karen Storm (Jerome); grandchildren, Erin Gahimer, Lauren Reyes (Fernando), Steven Vischak (Lacey), Hannah Gahimer, Gracie Storm and Stanley Vischak; great-grandchildren, Christopher Cooper and Kason Cooper. Also dear to Joe, was Julie Gahimer. Joe was preceeded in death by his wife of 60 years, Alice; both parents, Maxine and Gilbert; and brothers Jimmy and Eugene.
Joe was born March 4, 1932 in Linwood, Indiana. He graduated from Frankton High School in 1950. Joe attended Indiana University in Bloomington and graduated from IU Medical School Indianapolis in 1957. Following Medical School, he joined the Public Health Service in Atlanta, Georgia where he served for 2 years. Joe practiced medicine for over 3 decades in Anderson and specialized in internal medicine and cardiology. He was The Chief of Staff at both Community of Anderson and St. John’s Hickey Memorial Hospital, and in 1974, Joe served as the President of the Madison County Medical Society.
He had one of the longest tenures as a member of Anderson Country Club, where he was a member for over 50 years. Joe could often be found on the golf course or sitting by the pool watching his children or grandchildren swim. Joe traveled to many different golf courses, including the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland, where he scored a hole-in-one. Joe and Alice spent many winters in Sebring, Florida. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Joe loved to read, golf, play bridge, and eat good food. He also enjoyed watching his Indiana Hoosiers and Pacers, attending Connor Prairie’s Symphony on the Prairie, catching walleye in Canada and spending time with his family and friends. Special thanks from the family to Misty and Scott Rambis for the wonderful care delivered to Joe and Alice in their final years.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will also be held on Thursday at the funeral home beginning at 11 AM up until the funeral at 2:00 PM.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Anderson Christian Center or Alternatives Incorporated of Anderson.
