Thomas J. McCarthy, Jr., 83, of Worcester died Friday, August 26th at home. He leaves his long-time friend of 44 years, Eui-Deuk “Doug” Do and friends from all over the world and the neighborhood who were like family to him. Tom was born in Worcester, the son of Thomas J. McCarthy, Sr. and Victoria (Moore) McCarthy and was a lifelong resident of Worcester.
Tom graduated from Clark University with a Master’s Degree in Mathematics. He taught Math at North High School for 38 years, retiring in 2009 and later traveled to China where he taught at the Suzhou Health College for 10 years. Tom was awarded an Honorary Citizen of the Municipal Government of Suzhou for his contribution to Suzhou Health College. He was a member of the Worcester Teacher’s Union where Tom was a Treasurer. He also served on the board of the former Worcester Children’s Theatre. With his great passion for theatres, Tom was a patron of the New York Theatres. Tom was a world traveler and a gourmand who enjoyed visiting Europe, China, Russia, South East Asia, Mexico and Aruba, and enjoyed their fine cuisines.
Funeral services and burial in St. John’s Cemetery are private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to North High School, 140 Harrington Way, Worcester, MA 01604.
