William “Bill” Earl Smith, Jr. 82, of Whitman passed peacefully on August 26th at home.
Born in Boston, MA to the late William E. Smith, Sr. and the late Maria (Lomuscio) Smith. Bill was preceded in death by his son William “Billy” M. Smith, and his siblings: Richard Smith, Raymond Smith, Alice (Farren) Smith and James Tower.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Elizabeth J. (Grant) Smith and their children: Karyn (Smith) Buckley and “the late” Kevin Buckley, and Susan (Smith) Kent and Erik Kent. Grandfather to 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. His siblings: Vito and his wife Arlene (Jacobsen) Smith, Paul Smith, Kathryn (Czupailo) Smith, Vincent and his wife Patricia (Kinahan) Smith and sister Margaret (Smith) Tower. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He loved traveling the world with his wife and his family. Bill’s hobbies included cooking, painting and fishing. He and his wife enjoyed spending their winters in Clewiston, Florida for the past 20 years.
Bill retired from the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Department as Assistant Chief of Transportation. He previously worked for James Fitzgerald Insurance Company as an Insurance Agent in Brockton and for Stones Trucking Company as a Truck Driver in Boston.
Bill served in the United States Army (Calvary) in Korea.
Family and friends are invited to attend his visiting hours on Tuesday August 30 from 4:00-7:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman and his funeral services on Wednesday August 31 at 9:45 AM from the Chapel, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 AM in the Saint Bridget Church, Abington. Burial will follow at 1:30 PM in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
