Dateline: Mansfield, MA
Thelma Reid of Mansfield died peacefully on Tuesday, August 23, at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. She was 87. Services will be on Wednesday, August 31, at the Sherman and Jackson Funeral Home in Mansfield. Visitation begins at 9 am, and a celebration of life begins at 10. Burial will follow at Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.
Thelma was born in Boston on March 16, 1935, and she was raised in Medfield by her mother, Elsie (Rattray) Colcord and Guy Colcord. She spent her early school years at the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, and in 1954 she graduated from Medfield High. Thelma then went into nursing, which was a perfect profession for someone who radiated such kindness, toughness, and good cheer in equal measure.
In 1960, she married Arthur Reid and moved to Sharon. There, they raised their family, grew their gardens, and plotted family camping trips. They pitched their tents from Prince Edward Island, Canada, to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. After Art died in 1996, Thelma moved to Mansfield, where she became active in the Mansfield Council on Aging and strengthened her remarkable bond with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Pam, of Warwick, RI, son Kevin and daughter-in-law Julie of Mansfield, son Greg and daughter-in-law Bonnie of Portland, ME; sister Edna Colcord of Wilbraham; sister Elly and brother-in-law Charles Cary of Harpswell, ME; and loving nieces and nephews. Her six grandchildren were the light of her life. She will always be a loving Neena to Kimberly, Sarah, Allison, Thomas, Madeleine, and Aidan.
In addition to gardening and camping, Thelma loved to ride her bike, spend time with friends and family, and offer refreshingly frank assessments of her beloved New England Patriots. She will be remembered for her exceptional baking skills, her kind and selfless demeanor, and her quick and irreverent humor. Above all, Thelma will be remembered as a boundless source of love.
Instead of flowers, please donate in Thelma’s name to the Mansfield Council on Aging, 255 Hope Street, Mansfield, MA 02048.
