John (Jack) Amaral, 83, passed away peacefully at home on August 7, 2022. He was the husband of Arlene (Brune) Amaral for 61 years. He was the son of the late Elsie (Espinola) and Manuel Amaral. Jack grew up in South Dartmouth and graduated from New Bedford Vocational High School. After graduation he went to work as a carpenter until he joined the Navy in 1960. He was assigned to the U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier, U.S.S. Lake Champlain which was selected as the primary recovery vessel for America's first manned space flight. Jack had the honor of being on board for the recovery of Freedom 7 and Commander Alan Shepard on May 5, 1961, helping to build the platform on which the capsule was raised.
After his tour in the Navy, he continued working as a carpenter until he joined the New Bedford Fire Department in 1966 and retired after 34 years of service. In 1976, he graduated from Bristol Community College with a degree in Fire Science.
Jack loved being on his boat KEE-SHA fishing on the Vineyard Sound with family and friends. He was also a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was well known for his skills in finish carpentry and was a “Jack of all Trades.” He was always kind and most generous to anyone who crossed his path. Those who knew him will attest to his tremendous loyalty, and strong work ethic.
He is survived by his wife and his four children Mark Amaral and wife Peni of West Melbourne, FL, Scott Amaral and husband Franz Limoges of Dorchester, Sheryl Friedland and husband Michael of North Dartmouth and Wendy Rego and husband Michael of North Dartmouth as well as 9 grandchildren, Ryan Snell, Craig Snell, Sarah Snell, Nicholas Rego, Meaghan Rego, Peter Piette, Nick Piette, Steven Friedland and Lauren Friedland. He also had ten great-grandchildren.
A wake will be held at Perry Funeral Home on Thursday, August 25th from 9-10:30 a.m. followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 42 County Street, New Bedford.
