DAYTON- Eugene Paul Meserve died August 8,2022 at his Dayton, Maine home. His death was
sudden while he was doing the two things he loved the most, farming and recreational golf
carting. His entire family surrounded him immediately upon his death. He will be cremated at
Poitras Funeral Home in Buxton, Maine.
Eugene Paul Meserve was seventy-three years old at the time of his death. He was the son
of Clement Earl Meserve, Sr. and Pauline Arvid Johnson Meserve. He grew up on his family’s
Dayton, Maine farm and remained there throughout his life. He went to Thornton Academy in
Saco, Maine. After high school, he went hunting, trapping, and farmed. He was also a Boy
Scout leader with Steve Stearns and a youth group leader for the Goodwin Mills Methodist
Church.
On March 26, 1977 he married Valerie Woodsum. They met each other while attending
Bangor Theological Seminary. After their marriage they resided at Gene’s family farm for the
remainder of his life. His wife and he grew one acre of greenhouses which supplied all the
Maine Agway stores with bedding plants, three acres of pick your own strawberries, market
produce for southern Maine Hannaford stores, and a large hay business. When Gene turned
these markets over to other vendors, he then went to college again. During these years, Gene
received from the University of Southern Maine a history degree and a Juris Doctorate in law.
After completing these degrees, he went on to complete a degree in teaching at the University
of New England. He also worked at the Agway in Westbrook, Maine during this degree. After
his education, he returned to farming and supplementing this income with being a pesticide
inspector for York and Cumberland Counties, Maine through the Maine Department of
Agriculture.

Meserve; and Justin’s wife, Jona. In addition, he is survived by Margaret Meserve and her
