Obituary

Ruth A.H. (Henry) Summers, 100, of Washington D.C., died peacefully Sunday, August 7, 2022 at the Hope Hospice Center in Providence R.I. She was born in Mitchellville, MD., on January 20, 1922. She was the daughter of Abraham and Annette (Jones) Henry, who deceased in 1932 and 1959 respectively.

Ruth attended the Mitchellville and Upper Marlboro Elementary School, the Garnett Patterson J.R. High School and graduated from Cardoza High School. She also attended Miner Teachers College / D.C. Teachers and Strayer College.

Ruth was employed by the D.C. School system as a substitute teacher and was employed by the U.S. Government Office of Strategic Services (Now the CIA) and the Departments of Labor and Transportation for 24 ½ years. She retired in May of 1970.

Ruth was a member of the First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights for many years. Her auxiliaries were: Celestial and Christ Choirs, Deaconess Board, Friendship Women’s group, Hospitality committee, taught Sunday school, acted as Superintendent of Sunday School for one year, First Dean of Vacation Bible School, and President / Coordinator of Silver Threads.

Ruth was married to the late, Douglass R. Summers, who passed in 1963. She leaves behind two Sons, Douglass Chiquito Summers and AnDre` Dorsey Summers, five Grandchildren, six great Grandchildren and four Daughters-in- law. All of whom, were greatly loved. She also leaves behind a host of Nieces and Nephews and many beloved friends, one of whom will be missed sorely, Loretta (F.B.I.) Yerby.

Ruth loved to travel to many far-away places, such as, Africa, Bermuda, Canada, Central America, China (the great wall), Caribbean Islands, England, Germany, The Philippines, and most of the States in the Continental U.S. including Alaska and Hawaii. Ruth wanted everyone to think of her as being on one of her long trips. So long, Goodbye, Adios, Bon Voyage.

Ruth lived her last two years with her son AnDre` and his wife Sharon Summers in Plainville, Massachusetts. We want to extend our great appreciation to all the exceptional women who so tenderly cared for her, especially Shayna Scurry and Jane Allard. Also, a special thank you to all the wonderful caretakers at Hope Hospice Health Care Center.

If you enter into prayer and make it a serious and unwavering part of your everyday life, you will begin to live no longer out of your own human talents and resources. Instead, you will begin drawing on the power of God for your everyday life. To God be the Glory!)

Mrs. Summers will rest at the First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights, 4934 B St., SE on Thursday, September 15 from 9 a.m. until service at 10:30 a.m.

Interment at Arlington National Cemetery.
