Monroe Mathis Gaines, 67, formerly of Fitzgerald, Georgia, passed away Monday, July 25, 2022, at his residence in Lincoln, New Mexico.
Memorial services will be held 11 AM, Saturday, August 13, 2022, at the Ocilla Baptist Church, in Ocilla, Georgia, with the Rev. Billy Stephens officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening, August 12, 2022, from 5 PM until 7 PM, at The Paulk Funeral Home in Ocilla.
Mr. Gaines was born in Ben Hill County, Georgia, to the late Morris & Anne Gaines. He worked for the Georgia Forestry Commission, retiring in 2009, as the State Training & Safety Coordinator. He was an avid motorcycle rider, loved music and nature, and a kindred spirit. Mr. Gaines spent the last ten years of his life out west in New Mexico, traveling, spending time with friends and painting.
He is survived by his two children: Robert (Wanda) Gaines and Anna Kate (Rhett) Roberts, both of Fitzgerald; two grandsons: Bailey and Bryce; and a sister, Sylvia Yawn of Lincoln, New Mexico. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life for over 30 years, Kathryn Gaines and a brother, Morris Gaines.
