The Day family lost their hero, Richard Elliott Day, age 73 of Porter, on August 2, 2022
The world has lost a beloved husband, devoted father, loving grandfather & great-grandfather, loyal friend and an impeccable leader. He was born on October 29, 1948, in the family home on Main Street in Porter where he was raised proudly by the late Elliott C. Day and Phyllis Berry Day. He has now joined his siblings Janice Day Clogston and Curtis Day and also a sibling who did not join us on this earth.
Education was extremely important to Rick. He attended Porter Primary School, Milliken School, The Little Red School House and graduated from Porter High School in 1967. He continued his education at CMVTI, graduating in 1969.
Rick had a love for all sports, but especially baseball and basketball. He claimed that “he was the best baseball/basketball/backseat player to ever come out of Porter High”. Rick really shined while playing high school basketball, holding the record for highest points ever being scored, 1198. This title was held until broken at Sacopee Valley High School in 1992.……..a record that he held for 25 years! Rick made a point to attend as many high school baseball, basketball and other sporting events as possible. He was known to be the high school baseball team’s biggest fan.
Rick married his high school sweetheart, Denise Jordan Day, on December 21, 1968. Rick and Denise went on to raise their two boys just down the street from where he grew up.
Anyone who knew Rick, knew he loved to work. He had an incredible work ethic. At the very early age of 12, he mowed lawns. In high school he painted houses locally and worked for the state painting bridges. Once he graduated from college he began his career at E.C. Jordan Co. where he worked for 29 years. He then worked for Patco, Inc. for 15 years and was proudly finishing his career at Sebago Technics. Rick held many professional certifications throughout his engineering career. Many say that he was one of the hardest working men that they’d ever met. He worked until the day that he died so that he could provide for his family.
Besides his devotion to his civil engineering career for 53 years, Rick was a very patriotic man and was extremely devoted to his country and his community. His love for his community ran deep from the moment he was born to the moment of his passing. He was a proud citizen of the Town of Porter, he was a member of the Calvary Bible Church, he served on the MSAD 55 School Board for 15 years, he was a member of the Porter Alumni Association, he served on many committees throughout the years for the Town of Porter, he was a member of the Kezar Falls Fire Department where he was recently asked to serve on their board of directors, he was a charter member of the Ossipee Valley Agricultural Society and he was a member of the Greenleaf Masonic Lodge #117 for over 50 years. For several years Rick held the title for the youngest to serve as Worshipful Master.
During the fall and early winter months the family could be seen in the woods making memories together, where he passed on the family tradition to his two boys, his three grandchildren and other family members. Meanwhile, Denise kept busy throwing a “Hunter’s Widow” sale at her shop in town. His favorite rabbit dog was Patches, the family beagle.
Rick lived for his family and cherished watching them all grow. He passed on his love of chocolate (occasionally mud), an extraordinary work ethic, the importance of education and the “dead-eye-day” shot. If you asked Rick, his greatest accomplishment wasn’t his basketball legacy or his engineering career, it was being a father, a grandfather and a great-grandfather.
Rick is already greatly missed by both of his sons and their wives, Scott & Stacey and James & Valerie; both of his granddaughters and grandson-in-laws, Callie & Justin Dube and Inez Day & Nicholas Anderson. The family knows that even though he has left us, he is very happily reunited with his only grandson, James Hansen Day. His great-grandchildren Hunter, Owen and Olivia Dube will miss their Bampa terribly. On the Day side of the family, his only niece, Jill Fiegel and his only nephew, Jeff Clogston along with their families, will miss their Uncle Rick tremendously. On the Jordan side of the family there are numerous brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nephews and nieces (too many to list) that will also miss him tremendously. There are countless extended family members and many friends that he considered family that will miss him dearly.
Rick’s family will be welcoming relatives, friends and community members for visiting hours at the Calvary Bible Church, 348 South Hiram Road, Hiram, ME 04041 on Wednesday, August 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. The evening will begin with a Masonic Ceremony to honor his many years served as a Mason at 5 p.m. There will be a private graveside service at a later date.
