John Roger Cleghorn, Sr., 91, of Leesburg, Georgia, died Sunday, July 31, 2022, at Wynfield Park Health & Rehabilitation in Albany, Georgia.
Memorial services will be held 11:30 A.M., Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. The family will greet friends beginning at 10:30 A.M.
Mr. Cleghorn was born July 3, 1931, in Turner County, Georgia, to the late Ottis Cleghorn and the late Bennie Nell Boles Cleghorn Revell. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force. He attended Georgia State University in Atlanta. Mr. Cleghorn worked in sales for most of his life including for Decca Records. While selling Jacuzzi gas grills in Montgomery, Alabama, Mr. Cleghorn began his love of BBQ. He became quite the aficionado and passed the love of grilling down to his sons. He will be fondly remembered for his stuffed mushrooms and his grilled bananas. He was an avid outdoorsman and a longtime member of the Sertoma Club and the Elks Lodge. He was also a member of Sherwood Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Maggie Cleghorn of Albany; sons: John Roger Cleghorn, Jr. & Kendra of Wetumpka, Alabama and Benny Cleghorn of Fitzgerald; grandsons: John Roger Cleghorn, III, Ben Cleghorn, and Hunter Cleghorn; a brother, Ottis Cleghorn of Marietta; and two sisters: Joann Miles of Marietta and Judy Nix of Albany. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Cleghorn and a sister, Faye Huggins.
