Muriel Nathalie “Mim” (Romine) Carr died peacefully on the morning of July 30, 2022, at the age of 97.
Muriel was the daughter of the late Hazel W. (McKinley) Romine. Born in Cambridge, MA, she spent most of her life in New Bedford. Muriel was a graduate of Holy Family High School and went on to graduate from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in 1944. She married her high school sweetheart, James J. Carr Jr., in May of 1947 and shared over 34 years together.
Muriel is survived by her daughters Diane Angelini and her husband Vinny of Fairhaven, Frances and her husband Paul of Dartmouth, and Cathleen Carr-Sharpe of New Bedford; and her son Patrick Carr and his wife Suzanne of Fairhaven, as well as her grandchildren, Abigail Carr, Patrick Carr Jr. and his wife Kristen, Seamus Carr and his wife Creign, Erin Carr and her fiancé David Gerber, Francesca Angelini and her fiancé Nick Bocash; and her five great-grandchildren, Aiden Angelini, Grayson Carr, Collins Carr, Campbell Carr, and Bowie Carr; and many nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband James J. Carr Jr.; her sons James J. Carr III, and Terence S. Carr; her sister Barbara Turek; and her brother John Romine.
Muriel will be remembered as a devoted wife, a loving mother, a beloved grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved cooking and baking, and there were always home-made desserts to savor, especially her chocolate chip cookies. She always strove to make her home a loving haven for her family.
Some of Muriel’s pastimes and passions were treasured times with her family, knitting, travelling, singing, and playing piano. She had a fondness for cats, and all things Irish. She was also an avid reader, especially in her later years. She enjoyed her weekly appointments seeing her hairdresser and long-time friend, Priscilla McBain.
Muriel was a member of the St. Luke’s Hospital Alumni Association and the Catholic Nurses Guild. She was a participant for over 40 years in The Nurses’ Health Study at Harvard Medical School. Her nursing career spanned almost 40 years. She was a communicant of St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church and did volunteer work for the church and Holy Family Grammar and Holy Family High School for many years. She enjoyed singing in the choir and being a lector at Mass.
Her family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Hathaway Manor for their excellent care of our mother, as well as Kindred Hospice. Thank you to the staff at Shaw’s Supermarket in Dartmouth for all the kindnesses they always extended to our mother.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday August 8th at 9:30 AM at St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
