Mr. Robert F. Whirty, a resident of North Andover and beloved husband of Maryanne K. (Drozd) Whirty, passed away on Tuesday evening, July 26, 2022, at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was 89 years old.
Born in Orange, New Jersey on May 16, 1933, he was the beloved son of the late Franklin and Elizabeth (Kelley) Whirty. Mr. Whirty was a graduate of Seton Hall University and an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He entered the military at Quantico, Virginia on December 6, 1956 and received his Honorable Discharge on July 1, 1976, after having attained the rank of Major. In civilian life, Mr. Whirty worked in New York City for many years as one of the top salesmen for Benjamin Moore. When he was named Salesman of the Year, he got to throw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium. In his spare time, he was an accomplished amateur photographer and volunteered for diverse organizations such as Meals on Wheels and animal shelters. He was an accomplished athlete and long-distance runner who ran the New York City Marathon several times. He will be dearly missed.
Besides his beloved wife, Maryanne, Robert is survived by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Susan M. and her husband Adam D. Maffei of Bailey Island, Maine; son, Robert F. Whirty of Andover; grandchildren, Robert A.I. Whirty and Hanna K.M. Whirty; and many nieces and nephews. Robert was the brother of the late Cherie Vicedomini and Frank Whirty. He was also a lifelong friend of Jim Reilly of Oceanside, California.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover on Monday, August 1, 2022, at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Interment and military honors will be held in the Ridgewood Cemetery in North Andover. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home of Andover.
