Frances Freeman Harris was born in Tifton, GA on February 12, 1932, to T.M. and Mary Worsham Freeman, both deceased. She died July 20, 2022, at PruittHealth Magnolia Manor in Moultrie, Ga after a short illness.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 24, 2022, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with the Rev. Trevor Ward officiating. Mrs. Harris will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 24, 2022, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service.
Mrs. Harris’ family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Frances' education included graduation from Tifton High School in 1949, G.S.C.W (now Georgia College and State University) with a B.S. degree in Early Childhood Education in 1953 followed by a Master's degree in 1961 in the same field. She continued her education with a graduate degree from the University of Georgia in 1964. Mrs. Harris's teaching career included Dublin, Moultrie, and Tifton. Retirement came in 1989 after 35 years of teaching.
A childhood friend and neighbor, she and Pickett Harris, Jr. were married in 1955 in Tifton, GA.
Frances was church historian at Tifton First United Methodist Church where she also served on several committees. She enjoyed photography and through the years designed many bulletin boards. She taught Sunday School in the Methodist churches in Moultrie and Tifton.
During her lifetime, Frances was a member of several organizations. She was the Charter Secretary of the Moultrie Lioness Club and served as Club President and District Secretary. After moving back to Tifton, she joined the Tifton Lions Club and served as Program Chairman, Publicity Chair and President. Frances was a past member of the Twentieth Century Library Club, following in the footsteps of her mother. She was also a member of the Tift County Retired Educator's Association and Club 55 at Tifton First United Methodist Church. Frances was President of the Georgia Association for Student Teachers also.
Survivors include her first cousin, Jackie Richardson of Macon and her daughters, Kelley (James Richard III) Hester and their daughter, Elizabeth, of Clemson, S.C. and Eden (Johnathan) Clark of Avondale Estates; nieces and nephews, Teena (Hal) Henderson of Tifton, GA, Paige (David) Ferrell of Waycross, GA, Betsy (Ben) Williams of Gainesville GA, Dave (Susan) Harris of Huntsville, ALA, Owen (Charlotte) Harris of Atlanta, GA and Calvin (Glenna) Harris of Atlanta, GA.
