Obituary

Philip R. Sullivan, 66, of New Bedford, passed away on Thursday July 7, 2022 after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Jack and Doris Sullivan of New Bedford, and a 1973 graduate of Holy Family High School.

For many years, Phil was employed in off-shore energy rig maintenance and as a diver, and a merchant mariner on both sides of the Atlantic and South America. In later years, he was employed at New Bedford Maritime Terminal. He also earned his realtor license. He was an active member of the Teamsters Union Local 59, where he served as trustee, President and Business Representative. He will be fondly remembered for his untiring dedication to his brotherhood of Teamsters.

Phil had a fulfilling, lifelong connection to the ocean through both work and recreation, starting in childhood with summers spent at the family’s beach home. Always quick to lend a hand to lift others or share a laugh, he was deeply loved and will be missed by many.

Survivors include his sisters, Marie Sullivan of Fairhaven and Michele Sullivan-Grant of Dartmouth, and a niece and two nephews.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday July 22 at 12 Noon at St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday morning from 10-11:30 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, prior to the Mass.
