We are heartbroken to announce that Leo G. Guilfoyle passed away at home in Londonderry, NH, on July 16, 2022. Leo was born in Boston on June 30, 1946, to Daniel Guilfoyle and Mary (Roddy) Guilfoyle. He grew up in Milton, MA with older brother Danny and younger sister Mary. Leo attended B.C. High where he made many friends and began a lifelong love of golf.
Leo graduated from Boston College in 1968 with a degree in accounting. That same year he fell in love with and married Mary (Cunniffe) Guilfoyle, beginning a 54-year journey full of adventure and deep affection. They moved to Derry, NH, and then Londonderry, NH, where they lived for the past 49 years and brought up their much beloved daughters, Katie, Jennifer, and Maura.
Leo served in the U.S Army Reserves from 1968 to 1974. He worked in banking his entire career as an examiner and then mortgage banker, retiring from his final position at the IRS in 2017. He was a longtime parishioner at Saint Mark the Evangelist Church.
He was a devoted husband, father-in-law, and simply the best dad and granddad anyone could hope for. His wit and humor were legendary among his friends and family, and his outgoing nature endeared him to everyone he met. Leo made any gathering or event better for his presence.
He enjoyed life and had many passions: golf (no one hit a straighter ball than Leo), good food, the beach, anything Irish (especially his extended family), reading, and playing card games with anyone willing to try their luck against him. Above all, he loved doting on his seven grandchildren for whom he would do anything: buying them ice cream, reading to them, playing yard games, babysitting, or even enduring seasickness to accompany them on a fishing trip.
He will be forever remembered for his kind, larger-than-life personality, and the world is a much emptier place without him.
Leo is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughters Katie Guilfoyle, Jenny Guilfoyle, and Maura Herbert; his grandchildren Oona, Rowan, CC, Jude, Nolan, Maisey, and Declan; his sons-in-law Andrew Fletcher, Ian Stewart, and Derek Herbert; his niece and nephew, Ellen and Matt and their parents Marty and Jane Cunniffe; his brother Danny; his nephew Dan and niece Chrissy; and his cousin Roddy.
Peabody Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. A Funeral Mass will be held July 30, 2022, at 11am at St. Mark’s the Evangelist Church, One South Road, Londonderry, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Massachusetts General Hospital, who worked a miracle and gave us 6.5 extra years to cherish him.
