Obituary

Ronald Thomas Slater – age 80, a 48-year resident of Winchester, passed away peacefully July 11, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband for 47 years of the late Marianne "Tootsie" (Matthews) Slater until her passing in 2014.

Born in Charlestown, Ron was the son of the late John D. and Helen (Coghlan) Slater. He was raised and educated in Medford, MA, attending Matignon as a freshman and graduating from Medford High School in 1960.

Ron graduated from the Bentley College of Accounting and Finance in 1964 in Boston with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management.

While working full-time, Ron completed his Masters' Degree from Suffolk University in Boston. Ron worked as an accountant by trade at multiple insurance companies in Malden, Boston, and Canton.

As much as Ron enjoyed watching the Bruins, Patriots, and Red Sox, he loved coaching and playing sports with his children. He spent many weekends skating with his kids and coaching youth hockey. Ron also coached baseball and made sure never to miss a game. He loved to watch his daughters' Irish step dance, and nothing made him smile more than when they joined their mom in a few jigs at their annual St. Patrick's Day party. Later in life, Ron's passion was spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren while fitting in many trips to Marco Island with his love, Tootsie. He loved to visit Ireland and always had the Irish tunes playing at home and in the car. Ron was a longtime St. Mary's Parish member and attended Mass daily. While his children attended St. Mary's school, he served as president of the Parents Association, where he transformed the school by running Irish Nights, Italian Nights, and other fundraising events. He also organized many Christmas gift collections for underprivileged children, producing 100% volunteer participation among school families. The gift-giving donations are still a tradition today at family Christmas parties.

Ron was the loving father of Sean Slater and wife Kerry of Franklin, Terry Slater and wife Aileen of Winchester, Monica Ross and husband Derek, and Shannon Sullivan and husband Jim, all of Winchester. He was also the cherished grandfather of Kaelah, Patrick, Brendan, Seamus, Declan, Siobhan, Liam, Molly, Devin, Ronan, and Rose. Ron was the dear brother of Maureen Slater of Stoneham, Helen Taddeo of Medford, and the late Denis J. Slater and his surviving wife Geraldine E. Slater of Winchester. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
