Sebastian ‘Sibby’ Davis, 97, of Truro passed away Wednesday, June 29th at the Regal Care Center in Harwich. He was the husband of the late Doris [Morris] Davis.
Born in Truro on September 27, 1924, to Mary Augusta [Veira] and William Davis, he was one of five children. Sibby enlisted in the Navy in 1941 and served on the battleship USS Massachusetts as a first-class gunners mate. He is also an honorary plank member aboard the ship and was in the battle of North Africa. He later attended the Naval Submarine School in New London CT and was assigned to the Pacific theater on the submarine USS Corvina.
After discharge and returning home from the war, he built his house in Truro.
Sibby was employed as a Carpenter of a various businesses in the area. He also did plumbing work, eventually starting his own plumbing business. In his later years he was Assistant Harbormaster for the town of Truro and worked and volunteered at the town's transfer station. He assisted his granddaughter-in -law Arozana Davis in the planning of the new Veterans Memorial in Truro center. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed his annual hunting trips to his Maine cabin.
He was a lifelong member of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he was Sergeant of Arms. He was also well known for selling American flags at the 4th of July parades.
In addition to being predeceased by his loving wife Doris, he is survived by his two sons, Wayne S. Davis and wife Joyce of Wellfleet and Brian G. Davis and wife Jeanne of Truro. He is also survived by his one grandchild, Jamie Sebastian Davis of Wellfleet and wife Arozona as well as great grandchildren Anwyn Tesson Davis and Rayf Sebastian Davis of Wellfleet, together with many step grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
To sum it all up he was a great dad, a hell of a ballplayer, a hard worker, had great spirit and energy, and will be missed by all those who loved him.
A Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 20th at St. Peter the Apostle Church, 11 Prince St, Provincetown. Burial, with Military honors, will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Truro.
Memorial donations in Sibby’s name may be made to a Veterans Charity of the donors choice.
