Kay F. (Curry) Patterson of Wayland and San Diego, CA passed unexpectedly on July 2, 2022. Her death was the result of an aortic aneurysm.
The youngest of seven children, Kay was born in San Diego, CA on December 11, 1935. She attended Sweetwater High School and Francis Parker School.
She met her husband of 64 years, Mike while in college and they were married at the beginning of their senior year on September 13, 1957. Immediately after graduation, Mike entered Air Force pilot training and for the next several years Kay brought her flexibility and enthusiasm as she accompanied him from base to base in Texas, Montana, California, New Mexico, Virginia and other states for a total of twenty-two moves. During the Vietnam War, while alone, she picked up her four children, including an infant and moved to the Philippines while Mike was in combat in Vietnam. They have lived in Wayland for the past 43 years.
A successful painter, her landscapes were particularly popular. She was active with the Wayland Garden Club and with the Danforth painting series. She volunteered in many capacities and while in Virginia Kay earned a 1,000 hour pin as a Red Cross volunteer at Quantico Hospital. As her children grew older, she worked at General Medical in Weston, the Perkins School for the Blind and Rath and Strong in Lexington.
Kay was a wonderful, resilient, positive, upbeat wife and mother. Her family members always came first.
In addition to her husband, Michael B. Patterson of Wayland, she leaves her daughters Jennifer VanSteenburg of Sudbury, Michele Patterson of Wayland, Suzanne Griscom of Shoreline, WA and son Lance Patterson of Chevy Chase, MD. Also survived by her grandchildren Chase VanSteenburg of Santa Monica, CA, Hayley VanSteenburg of Cambridge, Ben Griscom and Katy Griscom of Shoreline, WA and Brooke Patterson of Chevy Chase, MD.
A graveside service at the Patterson family lot in North Cemetery, Wayland will be held at a later date.
