Obituary

Mary “Marie” (Maguire) Leahy peacefully entered into eternal life July 2, 2022, at the age of 94.

Marie was the devoted and beloved wife of the late Edward F. (Eddie) Leahy for 63 years and the cherished mother of the late Sally Leahy, and sons Edward Jr. (Eileen), Robert (Lourdes), Paul (Rose), Mark (Alicia), Peter (Kristine), Timothy (Maria), Thomas (Barbara) and devoted Nana to six granddaughters and sixteen grandsons. Marie was the loving daughter of the late Robert and Henrietta Maguire (Dougherty, Crimmen) and dear sister to Joseph Maguire of Waltham and the late Robert Maguire and Marjorie Wilmerding.
Marie was born and raised in Somerville, attended St. Joseph’s School in Union Square, and graduated from Somerville High School in 1946. She married “her” Eddie at St. Joseph’s Church in 1950.
Marie and Eddie raised their eight children in Hull from 1958 to 1972. Marie loved taking her children for walks and to play in the surf and sand at Nantasket Beach along with her devoted guardian, “Skippy” the neighborhood collie who would faithfully stop traffic on Nantasket Avenue so she could cross with her kids in tow. Marie also served as the ‘Prefect’ of the St. Ann’s Ladies Sodality in Hull, but better known to her youngest children as ‘lady perfect’.
The family then moved to Weymouth in 1972 where they lived for over 20 years. After raising her children, Marie worked many years in banking and finance as a bank teller at East Weymouth Savings Bank and Mass Trust Bank in Fields Corner, and as an executive assistant at State Street Financial and Boston Financial Data Services.
Later Marie lived in Braintree, Port Orange FL, Charlestown, Yonkers NY and finally Southington CT to be near many of her sons and grandchildren.
Marie loved hearing about the experiences, news, and stories of her ever-growing family. Her avid storytelling-- rich in detail, full of emotion, body language, and facial expressions-- could captivate any one of her 22 grandchildren for extended periods. At times, Marie’s retelling was more engaging than experiencing something firsthand! Often, her stories would end with a pause and a reflective “we had a million laughs.”
Throughout her life, Marie gave generously to several charities particularly the Little Sisters of the Poor. Our “Mary, Mother of Many” was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Marie’s visiting hours on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. at The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated the following day, Thursday, July 21, 2022 in St. Francis de Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. Following the Funeral Mass, Interment will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 1:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, kindly make a memorial donation to the St. Francis De Sales Church Organ Restoration Fund, 303 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown, MA 02129
