Obituary

William F. “Bill” King, 75, of Lowell, passed away at home, unexpectedly, with his family by his side on Friday, July 1, 2022. He was the husband and “Mr. Wonderful” of Carol “Dolly” (Greenwood) King with whom he would have shared their forty second wedding anniversary in October of this year.

He was born in Lowell on November 24, 1946, and was the son of the late Paul T. and the late Margaret V. (Lane) King. He was raised in Lowell where he resided in the Highlands section of the city for his entire life. He attended the area schools, graduating from Lowell High School with the class of 1964. In his younger days he was a member of the Lowell Water Ski Club, where he participated in shows with his family and neighbors on the Merrimack River in the 50’s and 60’s.

After his high school graduation Bill enlisted with the United States Navy in 1965, serving his country during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge in 1969. Bill worked at Hanscom Air Force Base for 36 years. During that time, he worked for the U. S. Government from 1977 to 1981 at the U.S. Naval Annex, Bermuda. Following his retirement from Hanscom Air Force Base, he worked as a custodian at the Chelmsford Public Library until his retirement in 2020.

Bill was an avid boater and loved spending time on the water in the Merrimack River and at Newfound Lake, where his family has been vacationing for over 30 years. He loved staying physically fit, spending time golfing, water skiing, or participating in and watching any sport. Although he no longer rode a Harley Davidson, his love for the motorcycles continued throughout his life. Bill was a tinkerer and was always fixing things around the house.

He will be remembered for his sense of humor, and his words of wisdom or “Bill-isms.” Bill’s impact on those who loved him is best described by the words of his nephew Jason Long; “He taught me how to just be, sit, and wonder in the marvel at the world that is great, and every little thing in it, and live simply, and live kind.” Although he had many passions throughout his life, spending time with his family and friends truly brought him the most happiness.

In addition to his wife, Dolly, he is survived by his two daughters, Melissa Eberiel and her husband, Christian of Chelmsford, and Ashley Mullin and her husband, Christopher of Lowell; and his grandchildren, Lucas and Kyle Mullin of Lowell, William and Thomas Eberiel of Chelmsford.

He is also survived by “the good child,” Tammy Dean and her husband, Jason of Clermont, FL; his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Long of Lowell; his brothers-in-law, Alfred Greenwood, Donald Greenwood, both of Lowell, and many nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family.
He was the nephew of the late Agnes and Frank Viera of Lowell, and cousin of the late Franny Viera, whom he loved very much.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill’s name to Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autismor by calling 508-270-8855.
