Richard J. Stanton
Retired Dept. of Defense Price Analyst

TEWKSBURY: Richard Joseph Stanton, age 88, a resident of Tewksbury for 55 years, and longtime communicant of St. William’s Parish, passed away at home surrounded by his family after a period of declining health on Tuesday, June 28, 2022.

He was the beloved husband of Helen F. (Harty) Stanton, with whom he would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on September 30, 2022.

Born in Boston on December 23, 1933, he was the son of the late Anthony Stanton and the late Ellen W. (Durkin) Stanton.

Richard was raised in Dorchester. He attended St. Peter’s Parochial Grammar School and graduated from Cathedral High School. He later attended Boston College, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Northeastern University, where he received his M.B.A.

In 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War era. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Army Occupation Medal (Germany) as well specialized training at Cornell University in the Czech language and military intelligence.

Richard was employed by the U.S. Department of Defense for over 40 years until retiring in 2001.

During his retirement years, he volunteered his time at the Tewksbury Community Pantry, the Middlesex Shelter in Lowell, and the House of Hope in Lowell.

He was fortunate enough to be able to vacation at his cottage in Hampton Beach for over 40 years with many wonderful friends and family. For over twenty years he spent his winters in Ft. Myers, FL. which he looked forward to each year. Irish set dancing, following college football and the Boston Bruins were some of his favorite pastimes. But most important to him was spending time with his family.

Richard was a member of the Northshore Irish American Club, a member of the former Billerica Irish American Club, and past assistant Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop # 49 of Tewksbury.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Richard H. Stanton and his fiancé, Michelle Foote, of Hudson, NH, Christine E. Carignan and her husband Kenneth, of Lowell, Michelle A. Garvey and her husband Justin, of Amesbury and Erin N.S. Corbin and her husband Christopher, of Alexandria, VA: six grandchildren, Conor, Ian, Emma, Ava, Eoin and Declan: one brother, John Stanton and his wife Bernadette, of Walpole and their son David Stanton. He leaves many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Calling hours are Tuesday, July 5, from 9-11 a.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m., St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St., Tewksbury. Interment at Tewksbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Oblate Infirmary, 486 Chandler St., Tewksbury, MA 01876 or to Tewksbury Community Pantry, 999 Whipple Rd., Tewksbury, MA 01876 are requested.
